1
Color
Print the downloadable template on white construction paper and, if you’re going to do Sleepy Bird, color in her beak with an orange marker.
2
Cut Out
Cut out the ring and your character’s features with a pair of scissors. Put them aside for the moment.
3
Outlining
Outline the ring two times on a piece of cardboard. You can use a cereal box.
4
Cut Out
Cut out the two outlined rings.
5
Tying together
Place the two rings together with their openings lined up and tie them together with the end of the red yarn (if you’re going to do Fred) or green yarn if you’ve chosen to do Sleepy Bird.
6
Wrapping
Wrap the yarn around the rings, starting from the knot you tied them together with, until you can no longer see them. Keep wrapping the yarn around until there is hardly any space left in the center.
7
Cut Out
Separate the cardboard rings a little at the point that remains visible in the area of the opening. Cut the wool between the two pieces of cardboard around the rings. You’ll see how a pompom starts to form.
8
Tying knots
Cut a length of wool about 20 cm long and make one or several very tight knots around the pompom in the space between the two pieces of cardboard.
9
Removing
Remove the cardboard rings from the pompom.
10
Fold
Fold the 4 pipe cleaners in the middle and make a loop at the ends to form Fred’s tentacles.
11
Insert
Introduce the pointed ends of the tentacles into the lower part of the pompom.
12
Gluing
Glue your character’s features onto the pompom with a glue gun or white glue.
